Purpose: To help students access virtual machines through the vCloud portal.
Note: The only browser recommended for use with vCloud is Mozilla Firefox.
LSC allows students to access their virtual machines (VMs) remotely through the vCloud portal site. For a brief overview of virtual machines, see this article. The vCloud portal can be accessed both on- and off-campus. In order to access vCloud, students should follow these steps:
Type the entire address (Currently unavailable) into your browser's address bar, or simply click the link here.
You will be greeted with the vCloud login page. Enter your StarID username and password.
Once you have logged in, you will see a screen with a vApp for each of your courses and containing the virtual machines available to you. Click the green arrow to start all of the VMs in a particular vApp, or click “open” to view all of your VMs in that class. For more information on interacting with your virtual machines in vCloud, see this article.
Note: When you start your first VM for the very first time and click on the VM window, you will be prompted to install something called a "VMRC plugin". This plugin is required to see VM displays, so you will need to install it before you can continue. In order to install the VMRC Plugin, you should follow these steps:
Open the console of one of your VMs within a vApp. Once you have done this, your web browser will prompt you to either run or save the plugin file. Save the file to a location on your computer that you will be able to locate easily. Once the download has finished, browse to the folder in which you saved the plugin, and double-click it to begin the installation process.
Accept all of the default options in the plugin installation process. When it has finished, close all instances of your web browser.
Open a new instance of your web browser and follow the instructions above to log into the vCloud portal again. You should now be able to view your VM consoles.
